The epileptic seizure would be a temporary occurrence of signs and/or symptoms attributed to abnormal and/or synchronic excessive neuronal activity in specific areas of the central nervous system [1]. The excitability of an individual nerve cell in the brain depends on a number of factors including: excitatory properties of the membrane and microenvironment, intracellular processes, structural neuronal elements, and interneuronal connections [2]. Any excitable membrane, including that of the neuron, maintains a potential difference between the intracellular and extracellular medium as a result of the selective permeability of some ions, particularly sodium, potassium and chloride ions. The mutation of the genes responsible for the coding of the proteins that form the channels for the passage of these ions through the membrane can cause congenital epilepsy. For example mutation of KCNQ genes 2 and 3 causes neonatal epilepsy, the LGL1 gene causes lateral temporal lobe epilepsy as well as genes SCN1A, SCN2A, SCN1B and others. The first four genes related to the formation of potassium channels and the last two with the formation of sodium channels [2].

Control of epileptic seizures by electrical low frequency deep brain stimulation: A review of probable mechanisms
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease with no definitive method in treatment. Notably, the main way to treat and control epileptic seizures is drug therapy. However, about 20-30% of patients with epilepsy are drug resistant and require other therapeutic manners. Deep brain stimulation is a new therapeutic strategy for these patients. Conspicuously, there are no clear answers for basi...
متن کاملffects of morphine_ dependence on the induction and modulation of epileptic seizures in rats
Kindling is a very suitable animal model for studying basis mechanisms of epilepsy. In this model , repeated exposure to weak electrical or chemical increases neuronal excitability and there fore decreases the threshold for induction of epileptic seizures. According to abundant distribution of opioid peptides and their receptors in different brain structures and also the role of these receptors...
متن کاملCAUSES OF INTRACTABLE SEIZURES IN A SURVEY OF 10,000 EPILEPTIC CHILDREN
Although treated properly for epilepsy, a number of epileptic children have intractable seizures and about 5-10 per cent of them do not respond to anti -epileptic drugs. In the years 1986-1996 about 10,000 epileptic patients were treated in the Children's Medical Center in Tehran. A retrospective study of their medical records revealed that 41 of them had intractable seizures. I Of these 4...
متن کاملUsefulness of Serum NT-proBNP in Diagnosis of Generalized Seizures in Egyptian Children
Background Seizures may occur in as many as 1% of children. The most urgent type of seizures is generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS). N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP) has been considered as a promising biomarker in numerous acute illnesses. We aimed to evaluate usefulness of NT‐proBNP for diagnosis of g...
متن کاملPsychological Symptoms and Clinical Indicators in Patients With and Without Sleepiness Suffering From Epileptic and Non-Epileptic Seizures
Background: Sleep and seizures can affect each other in different ways. Meanwhile, sleep disorders are among the most frequent complaints of patients with epileptic and non-epileptic seizures, with various health outcomes. Objective This study aimed to investigate the psychological symptoms and clinical indicators in patients with/without sleepiness with epileptic/non-epileptic seizures. Meth...
